Tips for Bathing and Grooming Dachshunds

Because the longhaired and wirehaired Dachshund has a difficult coat, you may want to have it washed by a professional groomer. Even if you do, you will still need to brush your dog’s coat on a daily basis to prevent mats and tangles. Brushing your Dachshund’s coat is very easy – just start at the base of the neck and work your way along the dog’s back, down his legs, and under his belly. Always brush in the direction of hair growth and move slowly so you don’t hurt your dog if you come across a snag.

If you need to bathe your Dachshund, you will want to brush him first. When you are ready for the bath, fill the bathtub with a few inches of warm (not hot) water and place your dog inside. Use a cup to pour water over your dog’s back or use a handheld sprayer to wet down his coat. Once your dog’s coat is dampened, apply a small amount of dog-friendly shampoo and work it into a lather. After shampooing, rinse your dog’s coat thoroughly to get rid of all the soap and then towel him dry. If it is warm you might be able to let his coat air-dry but if it is cold you should finish it off with a blow dryer on the low heat setting. Show More
